There are three main strands to our emergency service role - prevention, protection and response.

Prevention

Although we are always available to respond if there's a fire, we want to stop fires from happening in the first place. Our community safety work is prioritised so that we help those most at risk of a fire in the home first.  The Fire Safety in the Home section of this website gives you advice on how you can stay safe from fire. A free Safe and Well visit may be available to you - requests are prioritised according to an individual's risk. You can see how you score by completing this form. We also do a lot of work with partner agencies to reduce arson and the number of collisions on the roads.

Protection

It's not just in the home where fire safety is important. All non-domestic premises by law must have fire risk assessments carried out by the owners or responsible person within that premises to ensure that any visitors, including staff, are as protected as they can be from fire and that they could evacuate safely. This is part of the Fire Safety Order and our role is to offer advice, ensure premises abide by the legislation and do all they can to limit the risk of fire. We have a focus on education rather than enforcement but we do take action if we have to and people's lives are at risk. As part of our education for business owners we run regular free seminars that cover everything the responsible owner needs to do to comply with the law.

Response

Our crews of highly trained firefighters are ready to respond in an instant. But it's not just fires we get called to. From the thousands of incidents crews attend, around 1,500 are fires in either homes, business or outdoors. We attend around 400 road traffic collisions and around 640 incidents we call 'special services' which can be anything including flooding, animal rescues, chemical spills, water rescues and freeing people, usually stuck in or down something. Firefighters are trained to deal with all sorts of emergencies and have the specialist equipment needed to help them. You can learn more about the vehicles and equipment we use to deal with these different types of emergencies on our fleet and equipment page.
