Santa Express (Christmas Charity Parade by firefighters in Yaxley):
MORE than £4,000 has been raised for The Fire Fighters Charity and local good causes by retained firefighters from Yaxley.
Santa has joined firefighters for the parade for the last 36 years. Last year they raised £4,200, and this year has passed £4,100.
Although firefighters are waiting to do a re-count to check the exact figure, they are delighted to have once again smashed the £4,000 mark and want to extend a festive thanks to the people of Yaxley. Further details.
Open Day, Saturday July 5
FIREFIGHTERS opened the doors of Yaxley Fire Station to celebrate 130 years of firefighting in the village.
It was a day of fun for all the family, however, it also had several serious safety messages for visitors.
As well as a number of different stalls, including the opportunity to 'dunk a firefighter', visitors watched a number of demonstrations including a demo showing what happens when you put water on a fat fire; a ladder drill by firefighters; and a road traffic collision extrication demonstration, showing how crews use their special equipment to free trapped casualties from cars following crashes.
The open day this year was a special event as it was celebrating 130 years of an operational fire station in the village. Yaxley Fire Station was first opened in 1878 and is believed to be one of the oldest serving fire stations in East Anglia.
The station is well established in village life and community events - including the annual Santa Express tour which is organised by firefighters and has so far raised more than £40,000 for local good causes in the 36 years it has been running.
