Open Day, Saturday July 12
DOGSTHORPE Fire Station opened its doors to the public on Saturday July 12 for its annual open day.
Despite the intermittent rain, hundreds of visitors gathered at the station to take part in the family fun, while learning important fire safety messages at the time.
There were a number of live demonstrations on the day, including a chip pan fire demo, to show the consequences of putting water on a fat pan fire, a mock up of a road traffic collision, where firefighters will show how they rescue casualties trapped in their vehicles, and an enactment of a building fire where a casualty had to be released from the fifth floor of the drill tower using the turntable ladder.
Children were given the chance to dress up as a firefighter and squirt a hose while adults about driver safety and the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes and how to book a free home fire safety check . Another popular stall was 'dunk the firefighter', where visitors (and colleagues!) threw a ball to hit the target and dunk the firefighter in a pool of cold water. Police, ambulance crews and the council's road safety team also had displays.
All money collected during the event will be donated to The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides assistance to serving and retired firefighters and support staff through the provision of sheltered accommodation, recuperative facilities, rehabilitation and therapy.
