Fire Services Headquarters is not an operational fire station but provides office accommodation for staff working in roles to support the frontline.

The chief fire officer and directors are based here as well as fire officers in operational support roles and the majority of the Service's support staff who work in a whole host of functions, including finance, HR, media and communications, IT, democratic services, legal services, community safety, fire safety, operational support, property and maintenance, administration, contracts and procurement, performance and project management.

Our Fire Control is also based at Headquarters. Around 30 control operators are employed to deal with the thousands of 999 calls we receive each year and mobilise fire engines, specialist appliances and officers to incidents. The team work in five watches - Blue, Green, White, Red and Day watches - and the group is headed by a district manager.

In May 2011, it is planned for our Fire Control function to merge with those in other fire and rescue services in the region as part of the Government's FireControl project. There will be one Regional Control Centre for the Eastern region to cover Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, and this will be based on the business park in Waterbeach, near Cambridge.
