The Big Fire Engine Activity Box

This is a box of resources for pre-school and nursery children. Its contents will help nursery teachers give children a basic understanding of the dangers of fire, including matches and lighters, and what to do if they see a fire in their home. It also helps children to understand what firefighters do.

The boxes are available for every nursery school in Cambridgeshire to borrow. Nursey schools in Peterborough can book the box at the Play Store. All other nurseries should contact their local fire service district office if they wish to borrow it.

The box contains the following:

  • 4 fire helmets
  • 2 fire fighter uniforms ages 3 - 4 yrs
  • 2 fire fighter uniforms ages 4 - 5 yrs
  • 1 big fire engine floor puzzle
  • 1 wooden puzzle
  • 3 posters:
    • Don't play with matches
    • Stop drop and roll
    • Firefighters
  • Teacher support folder:
    • 1 pack of activity sheets (for photocopying)
    • Evaluation questionnaire
  • Activity Sheets

The activity sheets contain the following activities:

  1. Balloons - count the balloons is a simple colouring and counting exercise
  2. Shapes - looking at shapes and colours and identifying them with the pictures
  3. Firefighting - recognising letters of the alphabet
  4. Count and colour - counting and colouring, and number recognition
  5. Tracking - getting the fire engine to the fire (co-ordination skills)
  6. Hot and cold - identifying objects that are hot and cold and highlighting fire hazards within the home, and those that can cause injury
  7. Shapes and shadows - more shapes (shadow matching exercise)
  8. Odd one out - the odd one out (observation skills)
  9. Jigsaw - colouring and jigsaw puzzle activity
  10. Colour the picture - colouring activity
