ATF links & legislation
The Arson Task Force (ATF) was established in November 2001 with the specific aim of liaising with other services and local authority departments to reduce arson. To achieve this, it has developed frameworks of operation, using feedback from the analysis of causes and consequences of fire and crime, and these are continuously reviewed.
This page contains hyperlinks to the websites of some of the ATF partnership members as well as further information on some of the legislation that embodies and supports the work of the task force.

Legislation
Police Act 1964
The Police Act 1964 imposes a primary responsibility on the Police Authority to maintain an adequate and efficient police force.
The chief constable is responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and for reporting any death that results from fire. The Police Authority is solely responsible for the direction and control of any criminal investigation into the cause of a non-accidental fire.
Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004
The Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 places a duty on the fire service to protect life and property from fire. At the scene of a fire, authorised officers are, under Section 44 of the Act, empowered to take the necessary action to prevent or extinguish the fire, or to protect any person or property.
Crime and Disorder Act 1998
The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 places a statutory requirement on police services, local authorities and a variety of other agencies to tackle crime and disorder issues by working in partnership.
