Safety Zone

Safety Zone is a multi-agency district-based event for Year Five and Six children.

Often run in the appliance bay area of the local fire station, it is an interactive workshop where children from all primary schools in the area learn, in a fun and interactive way, how to stay safe in the home and when out and about.

Each of the participating agencies sets up a scenario or display called a zone, and each small group of children has a set amount of time to visit that zone and complete the activity before moving on to the next.

Each child is given a Safety Zone pack at the end of their visit with freebies and safety information from all of the agencies taking part to reinforce the messages.

Agencies taking part often include:

  • Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service - what to do if a fire breaks out in your home, how to evacuate the building and how to dial 999, the dangers of hoax calls
  • Cambridgeshire Constabulary - personal safety
  • Road Safety Unit - staying safe on the roads and the importance of wearing seatbelts
  • EDF- electricity safety
  • District Councils
  • Trading standards
  • Dog warden
  • Environment Agency - water safety

Safety Challenge is a similar event run in Peterborough, delivered in schools by a group of actors on behalf of the agencies.
