Fire blankets
Fire blankets are made of fire-resistant material and work by covering an area of fire so that it goes out. They are particularly useful for smothering chip or fat pan fires, or for wrapping around a person whose clothing is on fire. You should always be careful to protect your hands when using a fire blanket and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Fire blankets conforming to British Standard 6575 are suitable for use in the home. These will be marked to show whether they should be thrown away after use or used again, after cleaning.
Fire blankets should be located in the kitchen where they can be easily seen.
How to tackle a fat pan fire with a fire blanket
- Do not move the plan.
- Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so but never lean over the pan to reach the cooker controls.
- Place a fire blanket (or a damp tea cloth or towel) over the pan to smother the flames, ensuring your hands are protected by the cloth. But only attempt this if it is safe to do so. If in any doubt get out and dial 999. Never put yourself in danger.
- NEVER throw water onto the fire.
- Leave the pan to cool down for at least 30 minutes. Call the fire service so they can make sure the fire is properly extinguished.
- REMEMBER: If you can't control the fire, get out; stay out and call the fire service out. Dial 999 and ask for the Fire Service.
