Rubbish on fire - Paston - Peterborough

17 April 2008, 9.09pm

One crew from Dogsthorpe was called to a report of rubbish on fire on Norwood Lane in Paston Ridings, Peterborough.

When crews arrived they discovered that this was two separate fires, both a mixture of tyres, fridges, and general waste. Situated fairly close to the first fire were three empty propane cylinders. Another three empty propane cylinders were scattered about 30 yards down the lane. The cylinders were not affected by the fire.

Crews extinguished the fire using hose reels and returned to base by 10.08pm.

The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.

Les March, Watch Manager at Dogsthorpe Fire Station, said: "Obviously rubbish of any kind should not be placed on a lane, or set fire to. However, this is especially the case with propane cylinders, which are liable to explode if they get hot.

"We recommend members of the public dispose of cylinders correctly and responsibly. Many outlets will actually collect empty cylinders and send them back to the manufacturers to dispose of."
