Television on fire - March - Fenland
02 August 2008, 9.52pm
Two crews from March were called to a fire in a kitchen at Eastwood Avenue in March.
Firefighters entered the home wearing two breathing apparatus and discovered thick black smoke and flames coming from a television in the corner of the kitchen. They used two hose reels to extinguish the fire.
Two casualties - a woman in her 80's and another woman in her 60s - escaped from the home prior to the arrival of the Fire Service. Both women were suffering from smoke inhalation and were given oxygen by firefighters. They were not taken to hospital.
It is believed that the cause of the fire was a scented candle which had been left on top of the television, while the women were in another room. The candle was in a thin metal holder and the heat burnt through the top of the television, starting the fire.
Ady Bradshaw, Crew Manager at March Fire Station, said: "If residents want to use candles, we would advise that they use a proper candle-holder and fit the candle in firmly.
"Always use a heat-resistant surface to place the candle on, like a ceramic plate. Never put a candle directly on a television or any other polished surface and never leave candles unattended."
