Emergency planning
An overview of our roles and obligations
We are involved in ongoing partnerships to stay prepared for emergencies, and we undertake regular exercises and assessments to help us do this. Often this is done collaboratively with other public services, such as the Police and the Environment Agency.
We are obliged by law - in particular by the Civil Contingencies Act - to work together in planning multi-agency responses to major incidents. Part of this work involves carrying out risk assessments for all eventualities and producing emergency plans that must be tested and continually updated. These assessments must be available for public access and can by found on the Community Risk Register website.
One product of the Civil Contingencies Act is the Public Resilience Forum, which is explained in more depth on the Cambridgeshire County Council website (more on Civil Protection in Cambridgeshire).
In your area: Local Government
The Civil Contingencies Act also requires a local government-led team to conduct risk assessments and make appropriate plans. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Resilience Forum is in place with its various sub-groups undertaking tasks to report back to them and they in turn report to the Government Office for the East of England (GOEast). One such sub group is the Special Capabilities Sub Group that we Chair, which is made up of mainly emergency service members.
