If you encounter a fire

If you come across a fire, we recommend that you DO NOT attempt to put it out yourself. Flames, heat, smoke and fumes can cause serious harm and result in injuries that can prove fatal.

Buildings and possessions can be replaced - you can't replace your life.

If you see a fire, move away from the area and ring 999 immediately.

For building fires, remember the fire service motto - get out, stay out, call 999 - closing all doors behind you.

For further information about how to make a 999 call, see the section 'Calling 999'.

In our fire safety section you can also learn more about what to do if you have a fire in your home.
