Building fire - Chesterton - Cambridge
12/04/2017 - 10.48AM
Two crews from Cambridge were called to a kitchen fire at the Milton Arms in Milton Road after a fryer caught alight.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel and a CO2 extinguisher to extinguish the fire and returned to their station by 11.45am.
Cause of the fire was accidental.
Head of Community Fire Safety Group Commander Kevin Napier said: “Chip pan fires are most commonly caused by overheating or overfilling of the oil in the pan or simply because wet chips have caused the hot oil to bubble and overflow.
"When using a chip pan, never fill the pan more than one-third full with fat or oil and always dry the chips before putting them into the pan. Never leave a chip pan unattended or put the chips into the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke. If this happens, you should ensure you turn off the heat and leave the oil to cool to avoid a fire occurring. If you do have a chip pan fire, get out, stay out and dial 999.”
