Ever thought about becoming an on-call firefighter?
Are you over 18 and live or work within five minutes of a fire station in Cambridgeshire? Could you become an on-call firefighter at one of our stations across the county?
Taster sessions are being held at fire stations across Cambridgeshire this summer, including a women only session in St Ives:
- Saturday 16 June, 12:30pm-3pm – St Ives Fire Station, Women only
- Saturday 23 June, 10am – 2pm - Cottenham Fire Station
- Saturday 30 June, 10am – 1pm - Huntingdon Fire Station
- Saturday 7 July, 10am – 1pm – Soham Fire Station
On-call firefighters are men and women who may have other jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend cover. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours).
When they are on-call they may be at home, working for themselves or for a nearby company or out in their local community (staying within a five-minute travel time of the fire station).
At the taster sessions, attendees will have the chance to talk to on-call firefighters, and can try out some of the activities that a firefighter needs to be able to do, meet those who do the job and look at some of the equipment used in the role. They’ll also get the opportunity to find out more about the recruitment process.
Group Commander Gary Mitchley, head of on-call commented:
“On-call firefighters are a vital part of today's fire and rescue service and respond to a range of incidents, from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, or animal rescues to promoting fire safety.
“Taster sessions are a fantastic opportunity for anyone considering applying, to find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter.
“It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to welcome members of the community people from all backgrounds to the events.”
Now’s your chance to find out more about the role of an on-call firefighter and the huge part they play in keeping our communities safe. All you need to do is book onto one of the events.
