Fire in derelict building - Romsey - Cambridge

Crews from Cambridge and Cottenham were called to a fire at a derelict building on the old Brookfields Hospital site in Vinery Road.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel and a jet to extinguish the fire which was about 30 metres by 20 metres in a wooden building adjoining the old hospital.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke and crews returned to their stations by 7.48pm.

Station Commander Jamie Johnson said although the fire had started inside the buiding crews had to remove boards which had been used to secure the building in order to gain entry.

They used electric saws and ceiling cutters to pull boards down from the ceiling where the fire was.

SC Johnson said: "The fire was in the roof space so there was a lot of insulation and boards that we had to cut away to make sure there were no pockets of heat left over. It could have turned into quite a serious fire but the crews worked really hard to make sure it didn't spread to the disused hospital."

Cause of the fire was deliberate.
