House fire - Somersham - Huntingdonshire

Crews from Chatteris, Huntingdon and Cottenham were called to a house fire in sheltered accommodation in Springfield.

Firefighters rescued a 95-year-old woman from the property, who was given oxygen at the scene after suffering smoke inhalation. She was later taken to hospital by ambulance.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the house.

Crew Commander Paul Stephens praised the actions of neighbours who smashed a window of the locked property to put a hose through a window to help extinguish some chairs and a rug which had caught fire in the kitchen before the arrival of crews.

"The neighbours did really well by putting the hose through the kitchen window and helping to extinguish the fire without entering the property and putting themselves in danger."

A fire investigation established the cause of the fire as accidental by person.
