House fire - St Neots - Huntingdonshire

At 5.43pm on Monday (29) crews from St Neots, Gamlingay and a rescue vehicle were called to a building fire in Fern Court, Eynesbury, St Neots.

Smoke was in the property and the residents called the fire service and safely left the house.

A fire had broken out in the cavity wall of the property and firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish it. Thermal imaging cameras and a sub-surface camera were used to check for fire spread.

Crews returned to their stations by 8.30pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental by person - carelessly discarded cigarettes.

Watch Commander Jon-Paul Jones said: “This fire started when a cigarette butt set fire to wood chippings, which then spread in to the cavity wall of a house.

“We would urge all smokers to ensure they discard of their cigarettes carefully by ensuring it is fully extinguished and if need by, keeping a sand or water bucket nearby.”
