Industrial unit fire - Ramsey - Huntingdonshire

Nearly 50 firefighters tackled a blaze in Ramsey on Saturday (10).

Crews were called at 10.37pm to High Lode Industrial Estate in Stocking Fen Road. When they arrived they found flames coming through the roof of an industrial unit used as a car bodyshop.

Lots of smoke was issuing and residents in the surrounding areas were asked to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters extinguished the fire, which not only involved the 20m by 30m unit but also an unknown number of vehicles inside.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used jets, ground monitors, the MultiStar aerial appliance, hydrants and pumped water from a nearby open water source to extinguish the fire by about 2.30am.

The incident was then scaled down as crews, including a water carrier, command unit and aerial appliance, started to return to their stations. One crew remained at the scene to monitor the area make regular inspections.

Station Commander Jamie Johnson said: "This was a significant fire, which was well established by the time crews arrived, and excellent work by the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings."
