Road traffic collision - Prickwillow - East Cambs

Crews from Ely and Cambridge were called to a road traffic collision after a car came off the road and drove into the river on the B1104 at Prickwillow.

Firefighters wearing dry suits used a rescue sled to reach the female casualty who had managed to climb out of the driver's seat to sit on the roof of the car.

Watch Commander Wayne Pringle said: "The casualty had managed to call the emergency services herself after the car was submerged half way up the windows.

"At this time of year roads can be icy wet and muddy, particularly smaller roads and and country lanes, so drivers should take extra care when driving in these conditions."

The woman was taken to hospital and crews returned to their stations by 8.08am.
