Firefighters Scrub Up Well For Annual Charity Car Wash
12 March 2008
FIREFIGHTERS in Cambridgeshire scrubbed up well for their annual charity car wash last weekend, by raising more than £2,400.
Crews from Linton, Cambridge, Whittlesey, Chatteris, Swaffham Bulbeck, Gamlingay and Papworth all took part in the National Car Wash 2008 last Saturday, to raise a grand total of £2,420 for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.
Although weather conditions were not fantastic, the rain stayed away and firefighters were able to wash hundreds of cars, leaving residents with enough spare time to stop for a chat and grab some essential fire safety advice before driving off in their gleaming cars.
Brigade Secretary for the Ben Fund in Cambridgeshire, Jon Neish said: "We were delighted by the number of people who came along to show their support.
"With so many hand car wash businesses starting up in the county, we were a little worried that takings would be down this year, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
"We also had a number of residents who have now requested a free home fire safety check as a result of talking to firefighters at the car wash. This means that their gift to charity may also save their own lives in the future."
Details of the total amounts raised by each participating fire station in the county are listed below:
- Linton - £482
- Cambridge - £411
- Whittlesey - £322
- Chatteris - £526
- Swaffham Bulbeck - £260
- Gamlingay - £99
- Papworth - £320
A further car wash at Cottenham Fire Station will take place this coming Saturday, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
