Update 8am

Crews have now left the scene. The fire will continue to burn but in controlled conditions overseen by site management. Please continue to keep doors and windows closed if you are affected by the smoke. Visibility on the A10 is unaffected at the moment but this may change if the weather changes as forecast. Therefore motorists are asked to please slow down when approaching this area.

Update 6am

Residents and businesses in the area of Waterbeach, Land Beach and Milton near Cambridge are asked to keep doors and windows closed this morning following a fire at a waste recycling site in Ely Road, Waterbeach. Approximately 500 tonnes of mixed recyclable waste is alight causing smoke to drift over the Waterbeach area.  Two crews from Cambridge were called just after 1am this morning (August 30) and work has been ongoing by site staff to move as much of the unaffected waste as possible and prevent further spread. (Cambridge crews have now been relieved by Chatteris and Ely crews).

Officers from the Environment Agency are in attendance and the fire is being allowed to burn itself out under controlled conditions. This may take a couple of days.  People and businesses affected by the smoke are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

With the expected change in weather conditions later today, motorists using the A10 in the area are warned the smoke may affect visibility so take extra care and slow down.
