Fire in the open – Meldreth - South Cambs

At 1.07pm on Thursday (26) crews were called to a fire on Whaddon Road in Meldreth.

More than 50 firefighters, including crews from Papworth, Gamlingay, Cambridge, St Neots and Huntingdon attended the incident. Crews from Haverhill and Newmarket in Suffolk, Royston, Baldock, Potters Bar and St Albans in Hertfordshire, Potton in Bedfordshire and Saffron Walden and Halstead in Essex also attended.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire involving around 50 acres of standing crop. They extinguished the fire using hose reels and jets and ensure the fire didn’t spread any further.

The crews returned to their stations by around 9pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
