Firefighters to host weekend of charity events in Cambridgeshire

Two car washes and a fire engine pull will be run by firefighters this weekend (Sep 3-4) to raise cash for charity.

All the events are hoping to collect as much money as possible for The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides support, rehabilitation and care for fire service personnel across the country.

On-call firefighters at Burwell Fire Station will be hosting a car wash from 10am until 4pm on Sunday (Sep 4) at the Reach Road station.

Burwell firefighter Lenny Gray, one of the organisers, explained the car wash is being held in conjunction with a community open day at Pauline’s Swamps. He added: “It would be great to see as many people in our community coming out to support this worthwhile charity. As well as having a car wash, families can also take the opportunity to visit the fire station, look around the fire engine and meet the Burwell crew.”

A car wash will also take place at Whittlesey Fire Station, in Cemetary Road, on Saturday (Sep 3) from 8.30am until midday, before the on-call crew heads in to Peterborough city centre to support the city’s annual fire engine pull.

Firefighters and volunteers from across Cambridgeshire will descend on Peterborough at 2pm on Saturday (Sep 3) to pull a 12-tonne fire engine through the city’s streets for two hours.

Dressed in harnesses with ropes attached to the fire engine, the firefighters will drag the vehicle around the city streets, starting at 2pm from Westgate, along Northminster, Broadway, Long Causeway, Cathedral Square then Cowgate.

It is hoped shoppers and residents will support crews by cheering them on and donating money in collection buckets along the route.

Steve Peacock, Watch Commander for Blue Watch at Dogsthorpe, who is organising the event, said: “This is going to be a tough event. We will need all the help and support we can get and so we are appealing to both shoppers and the people of Peterborough to come along and cheer us on!”
