Hot dates in September to have a go
21/08/2018
Ever considered a career as a firefighter? Come and have a go at our upcoming taster sessions taking place in Peterborough and Huntingdon (places must be booked).
The events encourage women and people from a variety of backgrounds to have a go at firefighting activities as part of a myth busting event to demonstrate what it takes to be a firefighter in Cambridgeshire.
The ‘Have a Go’ events will take place on Friday 28 September at Dogsthorpe Fire Station in Peterborough, and Saturday 29 September at Huntingdon Fire Station.
The event at Dogsthorpe Fire Station will be split into two sessions each day – 8.30am until 12noon and 12.30pm until 4pm, with a women only session in the morning, followed by a mixed session in the afternoon. On Saturday at Huntingdon Fire station, the day will also be split, with a mixed session in the morning from 8.30am until 12noon and a women only afternoon session from 12.30pm until 4pm.
Those signing up can try out some of the activities that a firefighter needs to be able to do, including climbing a ladder and taking part in some of the drills. They’ll also get the opportunity to meet those who do the job and find out more about their journeys to becoming a firefighter.
Sam Sanderson, recruitment manager at CFRS, said: “There are still so many myths around the role and what it takes to be a firefighter, so these events are great way to get an insight into the role and the requirements to become a firefighter.
“The fire service has been through significant modernisation over the years and the role has changed considerably, as have the people that do the job now. All of our firefighters really do bring something different to the team and this emphasises why we want to welcome people from a wide range of different backgrounds and experiences.”
Sam added: “We’ll be recruiting a number of firefighters over the coming years, so this really is a great way to give it a go, and see if it could be a career for you now or in the future.”
To register for a place call 01480 444500 or email recruitment@cambsfire.gov.uk. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, and all bookings must be made before Tuesday 25 September.
