House fire - Barton - South Cambs

At 8.01am on Saturday (16) crews from Cambridge were called to a house fire on Wimpole Road in Barton.

Firefighters arrived to find a rechargeable torch which had caught fire after being on charge overnight. The crews used small gear to extinguish the fire and cleared the smoke using a positive pressure ventilation fan.

The occupants were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm. They spotted the fire, closed the kitchen door and got out of the house safely.

The crews returned to their station by 8.30am.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

A fire service spokesperson said: “We urge residents to only charge their devices when they are awake and alert, so they can be ready to respond should an emergency happen. Electrical devices are a key part of everyday life for most people. Most devices come with failsafe features to ensure they do not overheat when being charged but rely on the manufacturers provided charging cables and adapters to work. Also, using the plugs and wires supplied with product rather than cheaper versions will help charge devices safely.”
