House fire – Dogsthorpe - Peterborough

At 3.03pm on Tuesday (8) crews from Stanground and Dogsthorpe were called to a fire on Newark Avenue in Dogsthorpe, Peterborough.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire in the kitchen of a house.

Station Commander Gareth Boyd, the officer in charge of the incident, said: “On arrival crews saw there was smoke issuing from the rear of the property. They committed a breathing apparatus team to extinguish the fire and ventilate the property. There was a female in the house at the time who had evacuated prior to crews arriving.

“The fire had started in the kitchen, where a pan of hot oil intended for deep frying had been left unattended and subsequently forgotten. Due to excessive heat build-up the oil self-ignited and the flames caught hold of the kitchen units above. We advise that when cooking do not let yourself get distracted as even a small amount of oil can catch fire and become larger fires easily.

“The occupant was extremely lucky that she discovered the fire in its early stages, as there were no smoke alarms within the property. Firefighters dealt with the fire quickly to minimise damage and remove smoke from the property.

“It is so important to make sure your home has working smoke alarms, preferably one on each floor. They will alert occupants to a fire in the early stages to provide the best possible chance to safely evacuate before a fire can take hold of a building.”

The crews returned to their stations by 4.10pm.
