On-call firefighters raise over £5500 for charity this Christmas

Throughout December on-call firefighters across Cambridgeshire got in the festive spirit and raised money for charity as part of their annual Christmas Santa sleigh rides.

With the help of friends, family and volunteers, crews at Yaxley, Linton and Thorney organised sleigh rides and Christmas visits to raise over £5500 for charity.

The annual Yaxley Christmas ride raised an impressive £3274. The ride has been a Christmas tradition for many years, and throughout the week the on-call crew, joined by their friends and family, escorted Santa Claus around the village spreading festive cheer to the local community. All money raised will be donated to The Fire Fighters Charity.

Linton Fire Station also held their annual sleigh ride, walking Santa through the streets of Linton, Balsham and The Abingtons, and raised over £2250 for charity. The team split the money raised with local schools in the area.

This year they are donating £220 to Great Abington Primary School, £185 to The Meadow Primary School, Balsham, £360 to Heights Junior School, Linton and finally £360 to Linton CE Infant School. The remaining £1440 will be donated to The Fire Fighters Charity.

Their Facebook page was flooded with praise, with many commenting on how special it made Christmas and how much their children love the tradition. They were also supported by their local Co-Op, who donated sweets for the events.

Firefighters from Thorney also held a Santa sleigh at the weekend. On Sunday (19) on-call firefighters from Thorney held their annual event for children and families in the local community. They are raising money online, and have so far raised £192 for The Fire Fighters Charity.
