Building fire - Whittlesford - South Cambs

At 1.44am on Saturday (17) crews were called to a large fire involving an industrial building on Mill Lane in Whittlesford, that measured approximately 40m by 60m. Ten fire engines, two aerial appliances, two water carriers and the incident command vehicle attended the scene.

At its height, 70 firefighters from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Essex were tackling the blaze.

By 8am the incident was scaled back to six fire engines and an aerial appliance (all from Cambridgeshire) at the scene and by 11am this was reduced further to just two fire engines.

Once the fire was contained the remainder was allowed to burn out in a controlled manner. Crews remained at the scene to ensure this was done safely.

Crews were at the scene until approximately 2.10pm but have returned on a frequent basis to check the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
