Lorry fire - A14 - Huntingdonshire

At 11.30am today (September 25) we were called to a report of a lorry fire on the A14 westbound carriageway between Catworth and Keyston.

Crews arrived to find a lorry carrying straw bales fully involved in the fire. The road is closed between Brampton Hut and Thrapston and is likely to remain closed for some hours as crews deal with the fire.

Six crews - approximately 30 firefighters – are in attendance from Huntingdon, St Neots, Gamlingay, Stanground and Chatteris.

Update - 5pm

Crews are working hard to clear the road. The lorry contained many tonnes of straw which was fully involved in the fire. The straw was baled and therefore tightly compacted making it difficult to get water into the load. Therefore, a teleporter has been called in and is lifting the straw off the lorry to allow firefighters to rake through it to break it up. Water can then be put on the straw to douse the flames and smouldering. A recovery company is taking the water drenched straw away from the scene in batches. This is an arduous process which is taking several hours. It is likely this will continue into the evening. Please be reassured crews are working as hard as they can with the recovery company and everyone else involved to get the road cleared so it can opened again.

Update - 9.30pm

The incident has now scaled down. The road remains closed so it can be repaired.

Update - 26/09 7.30am

The road has now reopened following the incident and repair works.
