Fire in the open – Great Shelford - South Cambs

At 1.58pm on Wednesday (20) crews were called to a fire on Hinton Way in Great Shelford. 

Around 50 firefighters, including crews from Cambridge, Littleport, Ely, Burwell, Gamlingay, St Neots, Chatteris and Huntingdon, along with the roaming fire engines and crews from Newmarket in Suffolk and Royston in Hertfordshire, attended the incident. 

Firefighters arrived to find a well-developed fire involving a tractor that spread to large area of field. They worked hard to tackle fire and prevent it spreading further.  

Residents in the area that were impacted by the smoke were asked to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.  

The smoke also impacted the M11 between Duxford and Trumpington. Motorists were asked to slow down and drive with caution. 

The incident came to a close at around 6pm. Firefighters reinspected the area at around 8.30pm to check for any hotspots.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
