Fire service urges businesses to focus on fire safety this September
07/09/2026
Companies across the county are being urged to prioritise fire safety during September as Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service highlights the importance of business fire safety.
Throughout the month the Service will be encouraging business owners to ensure they have up to date fire risk assessments and are keeping up with general safety requirements, as detailed in the Fire Safety Order.
To help business owners, the Service has created more short animations explaining some of the more common areas that companies often struggle to keep up with. These include emergency lighting and fire alarm checks, as well as general guides on fire risk assessment and the Fire Safety Order.
Station Commander Leon Collins, from the Service's Fire Protection team, said: “We know that business owners have a lot and their plates and fire safety is often not at the top of the to-do list. So, we want to help make it easier to access the information they need, as well as make it a more engaging rather than reading a guidance document, we have added to our series of short, animated videos.
“We’ve added useful videos about some of the common things that our inspectors see when they visit companies, such as when to check fire doors, emergency lighting and fire alarm panels. These go with the other videos that provide a basic introduction to Fire Risk Assessment and the Fire Safety Order.”
There will also be an opportunity for business owners to learn more and understand their responsibilities for relevant fire safety legislation as officers will be hosting one of their regular Fire Safety Presentations. This will be taking place at Cambridge Fire Station on Thursday September 24 from 2pm. This can also be attended online.
Leon added: “Attending a session will provide a better appreciation of the Fire Safety Order, the need for assessment of fire risk and the application of fire safety measures within the workplace. We really encourage business owners to book a place at a presentation as it provides a useful introduction to workplace fire safety, whatever level of experience you might have.”
