House fire - Eastfield - Peterborough

On Thursday (20) at 11.41am, a crew from Dogsthorpe and a crew from Stanground were called to a house fire on Reeves Way, Eastfield.

Speaking of the incident, Station Commander Gareth Boyd commented:

“Fortunately, a resident was alerted to a fire in the garden after seeing smoke and hearing the fire outside. On looking out to the back garden they found a large section of neighbouring fence well alight along with other items.

“They did the right thing, and quickly called the fire service, with the Control Room sending fire engines from Dogsthorpe and Stanground to assist.

“The crew from Dogsthorpe were the first to arrive and quickly had a team wearing breathing apparatus use a hose-reel to bring the fire under control.

“Unfortunately there was significant damage to the fence, external property and UPVC fittings on both properties.”

The cause of this fire was found to be a discarded cigarette that had ended up in an area of general garden rubbish.

Advising on how you can prevent a fire starting in your garden, Station Commander Boyd added:

“General housekeeping of gardens will prevent build-up of flammable materials. Clear up leaves, dead plants and litter when possible.

“If smoking outside, we would always encourage the use of ashtrays or other safe forms of disposal to prevent these accidents occurring.

“On this occasion, even though the fire was outside a smoke alarm activated in one of the properties, showing that they can still give early warning. Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on each floor, and ensure they are tested regularly.”
