Building fire - Fordham - East Cambs

On Monday (14) at 6.03am, crews were called to a building fire on Church Street, Fordham.

Crews arrived to find a significant fire at a restaurant.

Firefighters responded from Cambridge, Cottenham, Burwell, Sawston, along with four appliances from Suffolk fire and Rescue Service (Mildenhall, Wickhambrook and Newmarket).

Firefighters worked in sectors to get the fire under control.

Two casualties from neighbouring property were treated for smoke inhalation.

Residents are encouraged to avoid the area, and keep windows and doors closed if you can smell smoke.

Church Street is currently closed while firefighters tackle the fire.

A fire investigation will take place in due course.

 

UPDATE: 12.30pm

The incident has scaled down and two crews and the turntable ladder remain in attendance.

The road is likely to remain closed for some time, due to the structural integrity of the building. For safety reasons, the chimneys will be removed from the building by a contractor shortly.

Firefighters left the scene on Monday (14) at around 2.30pm. They returned later in the afternoon and during the evening to check for any hotspots.
An investigation is underway to determine the most likely cause of the fire.
