Four decades of service celebrated as long serving head of fleet retires

More than four decades of dedicated service were celebrated as Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service bid farewell to one of its longest-serving colleagues.

Graham Wiggins, the Service’s head of fleet and equipment, retired this week after more than 47 years of public service. Having joined in August 1978 as workshop supervisor, Graham progressed to the role of fleet manager, responsible for the Service’s fire engines and specialist vehicles, along with officer cars and pool vehicles. During his time, Graham has purchased around 700 vehicles for the Service and worked with seven chief fire officers.

Chief Fire Officer Matthew Warren presented Graham with his retirement figurine on Thursday. He said: “I want to thank Graham for giving such commitment to the Service. He has been ever present throughout my time and he leaves us with a fleet that is the envy of services across the country. He always has a desire to get the best deal possible.

“Graham has not only ensured our vehicles are top notch, he also plays a key role in securing sponsorship from our suppliers to fund our annual Excellence Awards. This means we can make sure we celebrate our colleagues for their achievements in the best possible way.”

Graham said: “I’ve had such an enjoyable career working for the Service, which is the main reason why I have stayed so long. This week has been hard after so many years, but I am happy to leave the team and the fleet in good hands. I have been honoured to work with some wonderful people, but I now look forward to spending more time holidaying with my wife Dawn.”
