Firefighters at ladder

On-call firefighter

Looking for a role with real purpose, where you can make a difference in your community? Become an on-call firefighter and join a team that saves lives, protects homes, and supports people when they need it most.

When your pager goes off you’ll act quickly and professionally, alongside your crew, responding to fires, road traffic collisions, rescues and other emergencies. These are moments when people need help and you can make a life-changing difference.

You’ll be part of a highly trained, supportive team, working together in challenging situations where teamwork, calm decision-making and commitment to others are essential.

Being an on-call firefighter:

  • Being ready to respond - carrying a pager and attending emergencies from your home, workplace, or within five minutes of your local fire station
  • Protecting your community - providing urgent help and reassurance when people need it most
  • Working alongside other commitments - many on-call firefighters balance the role with full-time or part-time jobs, self-employment, or study
  • Earning while you serve - receiving an annual availability payment, plus additional pay for incidents, training and development.

We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life—if you’re 18 or over, have a good level of fitness and can get to your local station within five minutes, you could be exactly who we’re looking for.
