Fleet and Equipment Manager

Salary: £51,092 per annum

Hours: 37 Hours per week 

Contract: Two Years Fixed Term Contract (with the possibility of being made permanent during this time) 

Location: Dogsthorpe, Peterborough

Hybrid Working - we offer a flexible, agile, hybrid working pattern where you can work from home, as well as from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and other locations around Cambridgeshire.  

About the role 

This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for managing the Fleet and Equipment function, ensuring that all operational vehicles and equipment are maintained, repaired and managed to the highest standards of safety, compliance and performance. Acting as the key link between the Head of Assets and operational teams, you will lead the delivery of fleet and equipment services that support frontline operations while achieving value for money and continuous service improvement. 

You will oversee workshop operations, asset management systems, budgets and procurement activities, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and organisational policies. Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the Service, you will provide expert advice, drive innovation and contribute to the development of fleet and equipment strategies that support current and future operational requirements. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and optimise Fleet and Equipment workshop operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and industry best practice. 
  • Manage and develop a multidisciplinary team, including maintenance, equipment, stores and administration staff, fostering high performance and continuous improvement. 
  • Support the development and implementation of fleet and equipment policies, procedures and strategies that drive consistency, efficiency and service excellence. 
  • Oversee asset management systems, ensuring the accuracy, integrity and effective use of fleet and equipment data to inform decision-making and performance reporting. 
  • Manage fleet and equipment replacement programmes, procurement activities and capital projects in line with organisational strategies and financial plans. 
  • Monitor and manage departmental budgets, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and maximise value for money. 
  • Take overall responsibility for workshop health and safety arrangements, including risk assessments, COSHH compliance and engineering competency management. 
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, providing specialist advice and ensuring a customer-focused approach to service delivery. 
  • Represent the organisation at local, regional and national forums, contributing to projects, working groups and future fleet planning initiatives.

About you:   

We are looking for an experienced leader with a strong background in fleet, workshop, engineering or asset management operations. You will combine technical expertise with excellent people management skills, enabling you to lead teams, drive continuous improvement and ensure the delivery of safe, compliant and cost-effective services. You'll be confident working with a range of stakeholders, managing competing priorities, and using data and insight to support operational decision-making and long-term planning. 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. 
  • Relevant industry qualification(s), such as:  
  • City & Guilds Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician 
  • Motor Vehicle Technology 
  • City & Guilds Airwave 
  • City & Guilds in Fleet Maintenance or equivalent 
  • Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Sound knowledge of fleet and workshop operations, including vehicle maintenance, inspections, repairs and record-keeping. 
  • Knowledge of financial management principles, including budget forecasting and expenditure monitoring. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of audiences. 
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, develop and support high-performing teams. 
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage priorities and deliver to deadlines. 
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel and SharePoint. 

Experience:

  • Experience of leading and developing teams within a fleet workshop, engineering, maintenance or similar operational environment. 
  • Experience of managing budgets and resources effectively to deliver value for money. 
  • Experience of procurement activities and supplier engagement. 
  • Experience of leading service improvements and implementing more efficient ways of working. 
  • Experience of developing and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
