Arson

Here are some top tips for preventing arson:

  • Keep rubbish bins out of sight – for example, in a rear garden, or keep them stored in a shed or garage until collection day.
  • Keep rubbish away from buildings.
  • Keep matches, lighters, petrol cans and other flammable or fire-starting materials out of sight.
  • Consider installing security lights – these can help deter would-be arsonists.
  • Consider fitting security cameras – they act as a deterrent and can record crimes as they occur to provide police with essential evidence for identification and prosecution.

Most importantly, if you see any suspicious activity in your area, visit http://www.cambs.police.uk/ to submit an online report or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Tackling in partnership

The fire service and police work together to tackle arson in our communities.

Immediately following a deliberate fire, our officers work together to carry out their investigations to understand how the fire started and then gather evidence to ultimately catch those responsible.

Arson is a crime, no matter how big or small, and it is something we take very seriously. It can blight neighbourhoods, cause fear in communities and can destroy homes, businesses and lives.

With Cambridgeshire Constabulary, we together run a variety of operations to target specific areas or types of arson and work with those living in the community to educate and inform residents about arson.

The best tools we have are our relationships with not just the police and partners agencies, but the people who live in the community. That is why we ask you to take responsibility to prevent arson and then report anything you see that is suspicious.

Together, we can make Cambridgeshire a safer place to live and work.

Fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is the illegal and unauthorised disposal of waste and unfortunately is something our fire crews can be called to extinguish if it has been set on fire.

The council will remove fly-tipping from public land and we would encourage the public to report fly-tipping immediately if they discover it.

Contact your local district or city council for information on how to report fly-tipping.
