Could you be a wholetime firefighter? Here’s what you need to know
Joining Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service as a wholetime firefighter is an exciting and rewarding career. But before you apply, there are a few things you’ll need to check to make sure you meet the entry requirements.
We’ll verify these criteria during the recruitment process, so make sure you have the necessary documents ready. If you’re unsure about anything, please get in touch with our recruitment team – they’re here to help.
What you need to apply
- Live within 20 miles of Cambridgeshire’s boundary (as determined by our mapping system)
- Have the right to work in the UK – you’ll need to provide proof of this
- Hold a full, unrestricted UK driving licence by the time you start your employment
- You’ll need five GCSEs (A-C / 4-9), including Maths and English, or an equivalent qualification. If you’re unsure whether your qualifications meet the criteria, check with an education provider or careers service
- Be at least 18 years old by the final assessment date
- Have no unspent criminal convictions (we’ll carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service check before employment)
- Be able to swim, including:
- Jumping or diving into deep water
- Swimming 50m in under 70 seconds
- Swimming 100m continuously using a recognised stroke
- Treading water for 30 seconds
- Surface diving to the bottom of the pool
- Climbing out unaided (without steps or a ladder).
