Two firefighters

Training

The training is intense and thorough and includes theoretical lectures as well as practical exercises. There are different phases on the way to becoming a firefighter which must all be passed to become competent.

Basic training

Successful applicants will be required to undertake a Phase 1 training course, which is an 8 week course at our brand new Training Centre in Huntingdon.

This initial training period will equip you with the core skills required to operate safely as a firefighter in Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Some of the technical skills you will learn during this course include:

  • Operate in hazardous environments using Breathing Apparatus
  • Safely work at height
  • Safely work in, on or around water e.g. to conduct rescues or extract water for firefighting purposes
  • Use and maintain specialist equipment e.g. breathing apparatus, cutting equipment
  • Extricate casualties from situations of entrapment
  • Learn how to deal with incidents involving hazardous substances.

Development

On successful completion of the Phase 1 training course individuals will progress to Phase 2 where they will build on the areas already covered and learn additional skills required within the firefighter role.

All training is designed to give you confidence in the role of firefighter and to develop your skills.  Throughout your development you will be given support both on station and from training instructors who are there to bring out your potential.

During this period you will have both informal reviews and formal assessments to ensure you are progressing at the required pace.

Competent

Your final assessment will be prior to 24 months in role and on successful completion of this you will move onto competent pay.

At Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service we value our people and believe in developing them to their maximum potential.
