Selection process
What to expect
Each stage of the recruitment process is there for a reason, to help us understand your strengths and to help you prepare for the realities of a career as a firefighter. From the moment you start your application, we want you to feel informed, supported and ready to succeed.
We know it might feel like a lot — but if you follow the guidance below and prepare at each stage, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of progressing through the process and starting a career that makes a difference.
Read everything. Ask questions if you're unsure. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
Step 1: Application form
Start by registering your details through our online system. This sets you up for the rest of the process — make sure your contact info is accurate and check your emails regularly.
Step 2: Eligibility check
We’ll confirm that you meet the essential criteria, including age, right to work in the UK, driving license, qualifications and baseline fitness. Full details of entry criteria can be found on our Initial Entry Criteria page.
Step 3: Online assessments
You’ll complete a series of online tests assessing skills like problem-solving, following instructions, and judgement in realistic scenarios.
Step 4: Fitness and swimming assessments
You'll need to complete:
- The Chester Treadmill test, which checks your aerobic fitness.
- A swimming test to demonstrate confidence and capability in water. This includes:
- Jumping/diving into deep water
- Swimming 50m in under 70 seconds
- Swimming 100m continuously using a recognised stroke
- Treading water for 30 seconds
- Performing a surface dive and exiting the pool unaided
- Climbing out unaided (without steps or a ladder).
These tests help ensure you're ready for the physical demands of the role.
Step 5: Practical firefighter assessments
This hands-on day replicates real firefighting tasks — like ladder climbs, casualty drags and enclosed space navigation. It’s not just about strength, it’s about teamwork, calmness and practical thinking under pressure.
Step 6: Final assessments
You’ll attend an interview and job-related assessment day focused on our Service's Values, the NFCC Code of Ethics and how you’d respond in real-life situations.
Step 7: Medical and pre-employment checks
You’ll complete a full medical with our Occupational Health Team and provide:
- Five years of references (employment, education or character)
- Proof of right to work in the UK
- An enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
What happens next?
If you pass all the assessments, you’ll be placed on a holding list for the next available training course. Depending on how long you’re on the list, you may need to retake certain stages before starting your firefighter journey.
