Selection process

What to expect

We want you to succeed and we’ll support you every step of the way. The selection process is designed to help you show us what you’re capable of - from problem-solving and teamwork to fitness and practical firefighting skills.

Here’s are step by step guide to the recruitment process to help you prepare for each step.

Step 1: Application form

Complete an online application within the set timeframe (usually two weeks). Tell us about your skills and experiences that match the firefighter role - this could be from work, volunteering, sports, or everyday life.

Your answers will determine if you move to the next stage.

Tip: Make sure you apply before the deadline! Late applications won’t be considered.

Step 2: Online aptitude tests

If your application is successful, you’ll complete three online tests to assess:

  • Verbal reasoning – Can you understand and evaluate written information?
  • Numerical reasoning – Can you interpret data and solve basic calculations?
  • Situational judgement – How would you respond to different challenges in the role?

You’ll need to pass all three tests to move forward.

Step 3: Fitness and swim test

Being a firefighter requires stamina, fitness and water confidence. We’ll assess these using:

  • Treadmill test – A 12-minute progressive walking test to measure aerobic fitness (42 Vo2 Max).
  • Swim test – You’ll need to show confidence in water by:
    • Jumping/diving into deep water
    • Swimming 50m in under 70 seconds
    • Treading water for 30 seconds
    • Performing a surface dive and exiting the pool unaided.

Tip: If you’re not a strong swimmer, now’s the time to practice!

Step 4: Practical firefighter tests

Now it’s time to demonstrate your ability to work in real-life fire scenarios.

  • Ladder climb – Confidence at height while following instructions
  • Casualty evacuation – Drag a 55kg dummy around a course
  • Ladder lift – Simulated ladder lift (approx. 30kg)
  • Equipment carry – Carrying firefighting kit over different distances
  • Enclosed space test – Working in dark, confined areas while wearing a breathing apparatus.

You’ll be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) for these tests.

Step 5: Final assessments

  • Interview – A panel interview assessing your skills, behaviours, and experience
  • Presentation – You’ll be asked to deliver a short pre-prepared presentation
  • Final Exercise – A task designed to test your problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Step 6: Medical and pre-employment checks

  • Medical assessment – Includes vision, hearing, lung function, and overall fitness to work as a firefighter
  • Occupational health checks – If required, we may ask for additional medical reports with your consent.

Tip: If you wear glasses, make sure your eyesight meets the firefighter vision standards before applying! Get in touch with our team to find out more.

What happens next?

If you pass all the assessments, you’ll be placed on a holding list for the next available training course. Depending on how long you’re on the list, you may need to retake certain stages before starting your firefighter journey.
